Politicians make promises and thats their job. But this one time I hope that the promise made by Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot at a recent media briefing turns out to be worth its words. Sachin has promised that Indian villages could see hi speed broadband very very soon.

India is a diverse country and we have discussed how bridging the digital divide is one of the biggest problems it faces. There have been innovative solutions in terms of mobile apps for farmers which is powered by reuters. But the main issue still remains the broadband penetration in Indian villages which could solves issues of communication, education and several others that prohibit the growth of these villages.

Sachin Pilot in his statement made to the media pointed out that though the teledensity in Metros like Mumbai and Delhi was soon to touch 130-140% the same wasn’t the case in rural areas. In rural India the teledensity is still 18 to 20 per cent.As part of government initiatives to improve this situation over 11,000 towers will be put up in tribal areas and sparsely populated areas as well.

While these seem tall claims we hope the younger politicians would stand by their word unlike the older lot which are known to make false promises. There is a need to improve the broadband penetration which would enable and encourage content providers to invest in providing content to rural areas as well. There is Google which is trying to do its bit with the Google bus but more initiatives are the need of the hour.
